Kojic Acid + Sun Sensitivity: What You Need to Know

Kojic Acid + Sun Sensitivity: What You Need to Know

If you've been using our Goat Milk w/ Turmeric & Kojic Face and Body Bar, you may have noticed a little disclaimer about sun sensitivity — and we want to make sure you understand exactly why it's there and how to use this powerhouse ingredient safely.

What Is Kojic Acid?

Kojic acid is a naturally derived brightening ingredient that comes from fungi and is also a byproduct of fermented foods like sake and soy sauce. It works by inhibiting melanin production — the pigment responsible for dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. The result? A brighter, more even complexion over time.

So Why the Sun Warning?

Here's the thing: when kojic acid reduces melanin, it also temporarily reduces your skin's natural sun protection. Melanin isn't just responsible for skin color — it also acts as a natural shield against UV damage. Less melanin means your skin is more vulnerable to sunburn and UV-related damage while you're actively using kojic acid products.

This doesn't mean you need to avoid kojic acid — it just means you need to be sun smart while using it.

How to Use Kojic Acid Safely

  • Always apply SPF 30+ in the morning, especially on areas where you've used kojic acid products
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection during your treatment period
  • Use at night when possible — your skin absorbs active ingredients while you sleep, and there's no UV exposure to worry about
  • Stay consistent with moisturizing — kojic acid can sometimes cause mild dryness, and our goat milk base helps counteract this beautifully

The Goat Milk Difference

Our bar is formulated with goat milk, which is naturally rich in lactic acid, vitamins A and D, and skin-nourishing fats. This helps buffer the intensity of kojic acid, making it gentler on the skin barrier while still delivering brightening results. It's a thoughtful pairing — effective, but kind to your skin.

Bottom Line

Kojic acid is a safe and effective brightening ingredient when used correctly. Wear your SPF, be mindful of sun exposure, and let the goat milk do its soothing work. ☀️
